BREIVIK, PATRICIA SENN
Higher Education in the Internet Age: Libraries Creating a Strategic Edge (Ace/Praeger Series on Higher Education)
Filed b purple, Greenwood Press. 2006. (ISBN: 9780275981945). Hardcover, 16.5 x 2.2 x 24.5 cm. This new work from Breivik and Gee addresses the unique challenges of today's information-overloaded culture while responding to the significant changes that have occurred on campuses during the past fifteen years. Chief among these changes are the pervasive use of the Internet, growing community engagement, distance education, the emphasis on more active learning, and the assessment of student learning outcomes. The work is enriched by a series of key-issue statements about topics that have emerged within today's wired society, and by vignettes highlighting best practices that have been extracted from interviews with leaders in education, business, and government. Far too often, presidents, academic vice presidents, and other campus leaders fail to take advantage of the contributions their campus libraries can make toward achieving institutional visions and priorities. In this age of information, libraries can and should be one of the primary strategic tools. By highlighting the extensive and successful use some campus leaders have made of library resources and personnel, the authors hope to inspire others to see their libraries strategically. Written by a university president and a college librarian, this text explores strategic use of library resources and personnel. Topics include (for example) improving research productivity, supporting administrative priorities, and finding alternative sources of funding. This fully updated and revised edition of the authors' earlier book, titled Information Literacy: Revolution in the Library (1989), features new material dealing with the challenges of today's information-overloaded culture. BLAKEMORE-BROWN, LISA
Reweaving the Autistic Tapestry: Autism, Asperger Syndrome and Adhd: Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and Adhd
As cover, Jessica Kingsley Publishers. 2001. (ISBN: 9781853027482). Paperback, 15.8 x 2.1 x 23.3 cm. Condition clean. ref ZKVQ Although there is increasing professional recognition of the links between ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders, this is the first book to analyse them in depth. In Reweaving the Autistic Tapestry, Lisa Blakemore-Brown uses the metaphor of the 'tapestry' to explain more clearly to parents and professionals the interwoven nature of these disorders. She demonstrates how by focusing on defined threads of the individual's tapestry, such as communication ability or hyperactivity, within the larger picture, we can better assess the individual's needs and make more effective interventions. She argues that the more traditional approach, which aims to ameliorate specific problems rather than working within the bigger picture, can actually prove counter-effective. In a comprehensive chapter on interventions, the author discusses different approaches, emphasising the importance of early intervention and of finding the right approach for the individual child. Case studies are described alongside drawn tapestries to show how this simple visual method can easily be used to illustrate the history, current status and ongoing progress of a child. In this way, the tapestry can be used as a construct to define rich and unique personal landscapes. Useful for parents as well as professionals, this groundbreaking book demonstrates how a deeper understanding of the complexity of human development can lead to more appropriate early intervention and treatment plans for children who manifest complex symptoms, thus helping them to lead happier and more fulfilling lives. Good.

GROSS, MIRACA U. M.
Exceptionally Gifted Children
g upstairs, Routledge. 2003. (ISBN: 9780415314916). Paperback, 17.4 x 1.9 x 24.6 cm. Ref ZKVQ Condition good, clean. Exceptionally Gifted Children is unique. The first edition of this book, published in 1993, introduced 15 remarkable children, some of the most gifted young people ever studied, and traced their path through school, exploring their academic achievements (and in some cases enforced underachievement), their emotional development, their social relationships and their family relationships and upbringing. This new edition reviews these early years but also follows the young people over the subsequent ten years into adulthood. No previous study has traced so closely and so sensitively the intellectual, social and emotional development of highly gifted young people. This 20 year study reveals the ongoing negative academic and social effects of prolonged underachievement and social isolation imposed on gifted children by inappropriate curriculum and class placement and shows clearly the long lasting benefits of thoughtfully planned individual educational programs. The young adults of this study speak out and show how what happened in school has influenced and still influences many aspects of their lives. Miraca Gross provides a clear, practical blueprint for teachers and parents who recognise the special learning needs of gifted children and seek to respond effectively. Good.

WEBB, ROSEMARY
Cross-Curricular Primary Practice: Taking a Leadership Role (Handbook for Students and Newly Qualified Teachers)
purple, Routledge. 1996. (ISBN: 9780750704922). Paperback, 15.2 x 1.1 x 22.9 cm. Condition good, clean. Our copy Falmer publishers. This text discusses the theory and practice of several important areas of cross-curricular work in primary schools. It uses the National Curriculum Council's categories of themes, skills and dimensions to examine what is involved in such practice and to consider its current status in schools and future possibilities.; Providing practical suggestions for more well- established areas such as environmental studies, it also examines topical but under-represented themes, skills and dimensions such as media education, pupil self-assessment and discipline. The authors argue that cross-curricular practice both contributes to National Curriculum requirements and gives these requirements overall coherence. Cross- curricular practice also enables children to develop the knowledge, skills and concepts that are of value in coping with, and enjoying, the complexities of the 21st century. Suggestions are provided on how to provide leadership and stimulate staff interest in these areas by reviewing existing policies, teaching and resources. Good.
